  3.     By posing the question "Can a slut be raped?" in your
  4. minireview of the film "The Accused" (CRITICS' CHOICE, Dec. 5),
  5. you not only undermine some of the major themes of the film but
  6. also trivialize the crime of rape. The phraseology, although
  7. perhaps provocative, merely promotes outdated, offensive
  8. stereotypes about rape: that promiscuous women somehow deserve
  9. to be raped or are "asking for it." To use the word slut in this
  10. case is a vulgar and cheap shot.
