- By posing the question "Can a slut be raped?" in your
- minireview of the film "The Accused" (CRITICS' CHOICE, Dec. 5),
- you not only undermine some of the major themes of the film but
- also trivialize the crime of rape. The phraseology, although
- perhaps provocative, merely promotes outdated, offensive
- stereotypes about rape: that promiscuous women somehow deserve
- to be raped or are "asking for it." To use the word slut in this
- case is a vulgar and cheap shot.
